The results from last month’s election showed that Nepal’s ruling coalition has lost the majority mark. This is seen as a rebuke by the voters to the political elites of the Himalayan republic.
The incumbent Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s Nepali Congress emerged as the largest party, but his five-party ruling alliance failed to reach the majority mark. The alliance won 136 seats in the 275 member parliament, according to the Election Commission.
Prakash Sharan Mahat, a spokesperson for the Nepali Congress told AFP, “Our party has emerged as the largest party. Still, it’s not the result in line with our expectation. We had expected more.”
The Congress will not have to get support from some 34 independent and minor party candidates who for the first time secured a place in the republic’s assembly, owing to the wave of discontent among the voters.
The incumbent Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is likely to return as the prime minister.
