Poland said on early Wednesday that a Russian missile fell in the eastern part of the country, killing two people. The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it to be a “very significant escalation” of hostilities.
Questions remain about the explosion, including who fired it. Russia denies any involvement.
The United States President, Joe Biden said that it’s unlikely that Russia fired the missile. Even then, he convened an emergency meeting of NATO leaders, who were in Indonesia for the summit.
Poland’s government said that it is investigating the origin of the missile and is raising its military’s preparedness. The United States pledged support for the Polish investigation.
The Associated Press reported that a statement from the Polish Foreign Ministry identified the weapon as being made in Russia. President Andrzej Duda was more cautious, saying that it was “most probably” Russian-made but that its origins were still being verified.
The language used by Poland and NATO in their statements suggests that they believe this incident to be “unintentional.” NATO’s statement called it a “tragic accident.”
