India placed eighth in the Climate Performance Index

The latest Climate Change Performance Index by an independent organisation, Germanwatch, has placed India eighth amongst fifty-nine countries and the European Union (EU) for its climate action, ahead of most of the developed countries.

The announcement of a net-zero carbon emission goal and the strengthening of the country’s climate goals helped India move two ranks in the index.

The United Kingdom has been ranked 11th, Germany 16th, and China and the United States are ranked 51st and 52nd respectively. Denmark and Sweden are ranked this year’s top performers as well.

A statement accompanying the index said “India earns a high rating in the GHG Emissions and Energy Use categories, with a medium for Climate Policy and Renewable Energy. The country is on track to meet its 2030 emissions targets (compatible with a well-below 2 degree Celsius scenario). However, the renewable energy pathway is not on track for the 2030 target,” the Indian Express reported.

Meanwhile China, on the same index has dropped 13 places. This drop comes mainly because of the country’s continuous reliance on coal and the lack of clarity in its long-term policies.
