Airing “national interest” content is now mandatory

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said while the guidelines are effective from 9th November, the channels would be given some time to create such content.

Apurva Chandra, I&B Secretary, as quoted by the Indian Express, said, “After consultation with broadcasters and other stakeholders, we will soon be issuing a specific advisory pertaining to the time slot for the telecast of such content and the date of implementation.”

Under the new “Guidelines for Uplinking and Downlinking of Television Channels in India, 2022,” it has become an obligation for channels to create and telecast content of public and national interest.

As per these guidelines, a minimum of 30 minutes are to be given to telecast content that’s for “public service and national interest.”

After these guidelines are implemented, if a channel is found non-compliant, an explanation would be sought.

Foreign channels are exempted from these guidelines as they only downlink in India, not uplink.
