90 per cent of Twitter’s India staff fired

Over the weekend, Twitter fired more than 90 per cent of its staff from the India office. Twitter’s India offices are in the capital, New Delhi, the tech hub, Bengaluru, and the financial capital, Mumbai.

This is a part of the layoffs being done by Twitter, after its takeover by Elon Musk. Twitter just employed a little over 200 staff. With the recent layoff, Twitter’s India office is left with just about a dozen staff.

According to a report by Bloomberg, about 70 per cent of the jobs cut in India were from the product and engineering team which worked on a global mandate, one of the people said. Positions were also slashed across functions including marketing, public policy and corporate communications, the people said.

India is the key to the growth of various Internet companies, including Twitter, Google and Meta. It’s unclear how Twitter would be able to moderate the content with just around a dozen staff, after the layoffs. India has more than a hundred languages.

The company has about 3,700 employees remaining globally, Bloomberg News has reported.
