Around Virat Kohli, there was an air of bristling energy. He got the photographers all worked up just minutes after the Indian team showed up for their first training session for the Asia Cup. His handshake with Babar Azam sparked frank conversations about the newest bromance in cricket.
Rashid Khan ran up to greet Kohli and give him a hug after having just finished practising with the Afghanistan team. Rashid then started joking around with Mohammad Rizwan, the vice-captain of Pakistan. On a day that reached 46°C by the afternoon, everyone smiled, and for a brief time, the scene at the ICC Academy in Dubai resembled a college adda.
Men were all gooey and brotherly, even if they were ferocious competitors on the field, celebrated by popping their nerves and punching the air, and occasionally gave send-offs. But as the teams from Pakistan and Afghanistan split off, the Indian squad carried on as usual. Everything they did had an air of intensity coming from an adda.
KL While Rahul, Deepak Hooda, and Avesh Khan—who had all joined the Zimbabwean team on Tuesday night—were all given the day off from training, Rishabh Pant did not. The team’s remaining 11 players gave it their all under temporary coach VVS Laxman’s guidance. The team also received support from two net bowlers, left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar of Punjab and left-arm pacer Siddhant Sharma of Delhi.
Before preparing for a nearly two-and-a-half-hour long net session, the players played a little warm-up football and had a quick jog around the field. Just before the training session began, the throwdown specialists from the team meticulously inspected every square inch of the 22-yard practise strip by throwing down deliveries at various lengths to check for consistency in bounce. All systems were in motion as soon as the green signal was issued.
Ashwin’s drifter beat him off his first ball, but he immediately put it in the rearview mirror, stretched his front foot as far as it would go, and made several perfect connections to send the ball onto the basketball court and the nearby ground.
To demonstrate that he wasn’t only interested in smashing down the ground, Kohli also blasted Chahal inside-out over covers. He even tried the reverse paddle and switch hit at the conclusion of his session against spin, though less successfully.
It was then time to pick up the pace. Enter Arshdeep Singh, a 23-year-old who has steadily advanced to become an important component of the speed pack in Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel’s absence. Arshdeep began the game with a short ball, which Kohli dutifully deflected while encouraging his younger teammate. Kohli then took a cautious approach.
Arshdeep was incredibly impressive all around. He received some deliveries from the fourth stump to hold their line and others to nip back from there. When Kohli occasionally misjudged the length, he conferred with Laxman, changed guards, and continued bowling till Rohit Sharma walked out to bat. After 35 minutes of intense batting, he was replaced by his captain, who was followed by some laughter.
Rohit, in contrast to Kohli, was content to take it slow and not play shots right away. “Bowled, yaar,” came from the crowd after Arshdeep’s first ball, a nipbacker, split him in half. He removed a significant amount of rust by walking outside to flat-bat Chahal ten minutes into his session.
Rohit’s session was shorter and ended when he felt okay, in contrast to Kohli. After that, Suryakumar Yadav and Dinesh Karthik took control. In his customary 360-degree style of batting, Suryakumar swatted length balls to long-on, scooped short-of-length deliveries over the wicketkeeper, and ramped short deliveries on the stumps over the cordon.
Karthik, on the other hand, reverse-ramped Arshdeep and played the walk-across slog sweep to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s big, wide deliveries. Balls were hurled into the nearby ground against the night sky continuously over the next half hour, causing destruction. More of the same from Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja brought the session to a close.
This much was evident as India completed what was supposed to be a light session: they are eager to test the limits of the intent with the bat they have frequently mentioned in recent months. They may be attempting to get rid of the safety-first mentality that hurt them at the T20 World Cup last year by attempting to do so from the first ball.
