Jalal Yunus, the chairman of cricket operations for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), stated that after speaking with the veteran, the decision was made to rest Mahmudullah for the forthcoming series against Zimbabwe. The BCB announced the T20I squad and Nurul Hasan Sohan as their captain on Friday.
Earlier, it was discovered that Mahmudullah’s captaincy had apparently angered the administration of the Bangladesh team. However, Yunus claimed that after speaking with the 36-year-old Riyad, Sohan was appointed captain.
The T20 team has been a topic of discussion for several days. Riyad’s captaincy was a topic of discussion. We spoke with Riyad today over the phone about the T20 team. We have chosen to send a new team after talking with him about it. We’ll try it with some fresh faces. Sohan will be the team’s leader because of this, Yunus reportedly said.
Mahmudullah, who was born in Mymensingh, is still leading the T20I team, according to Yunus. “I simply want to observe how the new team plays in the Zimbabwe series. Later, I’ll give the latter more thought. There is no set roster at this time. But I won’t use the word experimental. For the time being, we are resting Riyad ahead of the Zimbabwe series, he said.
Riyad was really encouraging. We responded to the queries he had. I believe that things have been seen favourably, Yunus continued. At addition to guiding them in the T20 World Cup in Oman and the UAE last year, Mahmudullah has been the captain of the T20I team since 2019. Under Mahmudullah’s captaincy, the Tigers dropped the T20I series against the West Indies 0-2 earlier this year. On Saturday, July 30, the opening T20I will kick off the tour of Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club.
